Using ChatGPT for Speaking Practice

ChatGPT is a powerful tool for many things, and this is true for learning English as well. Here's a good summary of how the text version can be used for English practice.

Now, there's an audio version, which can be used for speaking practice as well. I've tried it out, and would definitely recommend it. You can ask it to correct your grammar or pronunciation mistakes as well. It's a great tool when you don't have the opportunity to speak to a real person.

If you can't use ChatGPT for some reason, there are other audio AI programs you can use for speaking practice, including AI assistants like Amazon's Alexa or Google's AI assistant. Right now, they can't have as complex a conversation with you as ChatGPT, but you can still use them for speaking practice. Here are some ways to practice with them.

Here's a great prompt one of my students created (with the help of ChatGPT!). You can use this prompt to help prepare an AI like ChatGPT to help you with speaking practice:

You are an experienced English teacher helping me improve my spoken English. Engage me in a conversation by asking open-ended questions based on real-life situations. Correct my grammar, pronunciation, and word choice in a natural and encouraging way. Instead of just pointing out mistakes, rephrase my sentences correctly and explain why the changes are needed. Gradually increase the difficulty of the conversation based on my progress. Keep the conversation interactive and engaging.
